Search Analytics

Open Questions

In the coming months, we'll be posting some of our open questions about search analytics. We'll list them here because they're not really appropriate for our surveys. Here's our first question:

  1. June 19, 2006: At a time when both user experience design and web analytics are taking off, why do so few people analyze their local site's searches? (click through to share your thoughts and see others' comments)
  2. June 28, 2006: We've all heard of the "long tail" when it comes to queries, and we can all imagine what the "short head" would be, even if we've never heard the term. But is there a "middle torso"? (click through to share your thoughts and see others' comments)
  3. July 10, 2006: Can you help us assemble a public library of search log samples? (click through to share your thoughts and see others' comments)

Aside from answers to our ongoing questions, we are always looking for:

  • Samples of a site's site search logs: It would be useful to understand and share each search engine's format for capturing queries. Please consider sharing a sample from your site.
  • Samples of queries harvested by tools that don't use logs: For example, many web analytics tools use Javascript to capture queries as well as other usage data. We're also quite interested in samples of these.
  • Your experiences with analyzing searches: Short anecdotes, or something longer; everyone loves to hear how others are using search analytics.
