Card sorting tools
See the updated list: Card sorting software (and online) tools.
While writing the book, I again looked at all the card sorting software tools. Some I discounted at the outset, some I have been using to run a sample sort, looking at how they work and the type of output from them.
Currently examining
- OptimalSort - online service
- WebSort - online commercial service
- Card Sword - Windows application.
- Mind Canvas - This is a research service from Uzanto that contains a method called OpenSort. Great fun interface for the activities. (Note: I edited this description after Rashmi commented, so the comment may not make sense in the new context)
- Card Zort - Windows application
- SynCaps - Windows application. Paper sorting, application for analysis
- xSort - Mac OSX application
Didn't evaluate:
- UZ Card Sorting - Part of a consultancy service.
- uzCardSort - a Mozilla extension. No response from the developer, so I assume nothing is happening.
- CardSort - Windows application. Only allows 18 characters per card, is buggy and the developer is unlikely to continue develop in the near term.
- WebCAT - This is an online tool that uses java on the server. I don't have the technology or the skills to set it up, and the demo is not compelling enough for me to bother getting someone to set it up.
- Socratic Card Sort - this appears to be a service for closed card sorting.
- Classified - This has frequently been included in lists of card sorting tools, but is definitely not. Participants have to select where to put each item in a list. If they do not choose correctly, they get an 'incorrect, please try again' error message. I'm not sure what the intent is, but it is certainly not a card sorting tool.
Comments
MindCanvas is definitely a tool that practitioners can use. In fact, quite a few have already used it / are using it. I can send you a link to a study if you want.

Let me know if you want to evaluate UZ Cardsort, I would be more than happy to make that happen for you. Also our site has been redesigned so the link you have to the page is broken.

SynCaps support both paper sorting and online or electronic sorting using any tool that produces EZCalc-formatted files. The analyses provided are extensive compared with most other tools and includes 'navigational alignment', showing the amount of agreement between participants and an existing design. SynCaps V1 is is fairly inexpensive. Version 2 is under development and provides new forms of graphical analysis (see http://www.syncapsv2.com/ ). Both support output from websort.net (in EZCalc format).

Thanks for the list. I'll try OptimalSort first.
